Morris Shapera, 80, co-owner of the Golden Rule store, who had been identified with the mercantile business of Crawfordsville since 1916, died Wednesday morning in his hotel apartment at Pass-A-Grille Beach, Fla. He had been ill with a heart ailment since Dember but was believed to be recovering when death came. Mr. Shapera, who had spent his winters in Florida for the past several years, was born in Motol, Russia, the son of Nachman and Rose Shapera. He was the youngest of a family of 12 children. Mr. Shapera came to the United States at the age of 20 and lived in New York before coming to Crawfordsville. His first business venture in Crawfordsville was the Shapera Quality Store, which he operated for 10 years. Later he purchased the Golden Rule from the late Charles Joseph. Mr. Shapera was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Oklahoma Scottish Rite and Crawfordsville Elks Lodge. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Charlotte Pearlman of Crawfordsville and a grandson, Winfield M. Campbell of Dallas, Tex. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Belle Shapera and a daughter, Mrs. Ruby Campbell. Funeral services have been set tentatively for 10:30 a.m. Monday in Bright Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Jewish Cemetery at Lafayette. - kz
