The funeral of Harvey Shanks occurred from the family residence on Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. O.H. Berry of the M.E. Church officiating. Harvey Shanks, 7th son of WIlliam and Mary Shanks was born at Simsonville (sic - Simpsonville?), Kentucky March 3, 1819 and died at Waveland, August 18. He was married November 15, 1837 and to this union were born 7 children of whom 4 survive. In 1857, the family removed from Louisville to Crawfordsville, where they lived until 1865, when they came to Waveland which has since been the family home. In June of 1883, the wife and mother was called away, and in February 1900 Taylor, the third son was taken. Mr. Shanks united with the Baptist Church in his early manhood, and he was a mason of the Royal Arch Degree. He was a man of rare gifts, possessed of a remarkable memory and a rare taste in literature. His favorite pastime was the reading of the masters of fiction and poetry and reciting from memory their golden passages. he was of a reticent nature and even his nearest friends knew little of his inner self. During his sickness he said to a friend, "I have no doubt, no fear. I am ready to go to rest." And bowed under his loved son's tragic death he said, "My times are in my master's hand; I accept his will." The family extend their thanks to the friends who have been so kind during the illness of their father. -- kbz

Harvey Shanks died Aug. 18, 1901, at his late home at Waveland. He was the father of John, Frank, Elizabeth and Charles Shanks and was 82 years, 5 month, and 11 days of age. From 1858 to 1865 the deceased lived in Crawfordsville where he was well known. -s
