A gentleman well known and highly respected by this community, died in Washington City on Thursday Feb 22, 1877, of congestion of the brain. Mr. Shanklin began the printing trade in the old Review office in this city many years since and in March 1867 accepted a positioon in the Government Printing Office, when his qualifications and abilities were such as to secure his promotion of the foremanship of the job department which position he held at the time of his death. Mr. S. (sic) was also a soldier in the late rebellion, having served one year in the 9th Regimental band, and afterwards on the discharge of the band, was made 2nd Lt. in the 135th Infantry. The deceased was born near Pleasant Hill, this county in 1837 and always claimed Crawfordsville as his home. The remains of the deceased were brought home on Monday mornin gin charge of friends and taken to the old home, corner of Market & Washington streets. The funeral took place on the following afternoon at 2 o'clock, Elder C.J. Boweles officiating. The Veterans Association, the Montgomery Guards (of which the deceased was an old member), conducting the long concourse to the grave as the last worldly honors possible at their hands. The following Resolutions explain themselves, and show in what high esteem the deceased was held at the scene of his labors.

Whereas: Divine Providence has sen fit to visit our midst and take from us one of our number whom a long association of years has rendered near and dear to us; and in the relationship of Fareman was always uniformally courteous and forebearing, and

Whereas, To the Will of God we bow in humble submission, believing that He doeth all things will, therefore, be it
Resolved, That we, as fellow working men, lose a good friend, a genial companion and a just Foreman, where ear was over ready to hear and heart prompt to respond to the call of suffering humanity..
Resolved, That we heartily sympathize with the bereaved relatives and friends in this saddened visitation of sorrow and whilst we recognize our words as cold and wanting the proper expression of the depth of sorrow that they are called upon to feel, we yet deeply grieve in the loss of our friend of past years and offer the parents, sister and brothers such consolation in this hour of trial as our meagre experience can give vent to
Resolved: That a copy of the foregoing preamble and accompanying resolutions be forewareded to the friends of our deceased Foreman with the hope that they will bear up under this severe affliction and bow in the humble prayer of our Lord, "Not my will but thine be done."

At a meeting of the employees of the Job Room of the GPO, held Feb 23, the foregoing preamble and resolutions were unanimously adopted.
-- Messrs. Hatch; CM Robinson and Wm. A. Hartman (half brother of the deceased) accompanied the remains of John A. Shanklin from Washington. These gentlemen were all employed with Mr. Shanklin the GPO. Messrs. Hatch and Robinson returned yesterday; Mr. Hartman deffered his return for a couple of weeks. - kbz
