Shell - Elwood

Elwood Shell, 17, lost his life and his brother, Ralph 21, received such severe burns that he died six hours later when the A-Loaf bread truck which Ralph was driving caught fire and overturned on Rd. 43 two miles South of Fincastle early Saturday morning. Ralph received his burns while trying unsuccessfully to pull his brother from the flaming wreck. The boys were the sons of Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Shell who formerly lived NW of town on a farm and attended grade school in Waveland. A younger sister is dead. Mr. and Mrs. Shell now live on a small farm two miles East of Waveland. Funeral services on Monday afternoon were held and Hunt and Reeves Funeral Parlor in charge of Reverend Hestler pastor of Methodist Church at Raccoon to which the boys belonged. He was assisted by Rev. Raymond Skelton Pastor of Browns Valley Christian and Rev. NT Gottschall. The sympathy of the Community gOrder of the Eastern Star out to Mr. and Mrs. Shell who are left childless by the double bereavement. - typed by kbz

Brothers, Ralph C. Shell, 21, and Winston E. Shell, 17, died as a result of burns suffered in a truck accident at the intersection of State Road 36 and 43, Saturday morning. Both were from Browns Valley. Double funeral services for them were held in Crawfordsville Monday afternoon.
