William D. Sering, 1006 east Main street, an old soldier and one of the old settlers of the county, died suddenly this morning about six o’clock of heart disease. He had been in poor health for four years and for the last three months his death had been expected at any time.

 
On Sunday he was apparently better and this morning he arose and dressed, then walked to the door. While he was standing there he was suddenly attacked and fell into the arms of his wife. His two sons hurried in the assistance of their mother and took him to bed, but he soon expired.

 
The deceased was a machinist and carpenter, but has not been able to work much for about four years on account of bad health.  For several years, he was in the grocery business in this city. Before the war he lived in Alamo, where he owned a saw mill.  He was a member of McPherson Post GAR of this city. While in the service he was a member of the Sixteenth Indiana Battery of the Tenth Regiment. He was out three years. Since he came back from the war he has resided in Crawfordsville.  He married Elizabeth Burk, who survives him, as do eight children, Mrs. CA Smith and Claude Sering of Terre Haute; Mrs. Eugene Newell, Walter Sering, Miss Ida Sering and Ralph Sering, all of this city; George Sering of Vincennes and Mrs. M.J. Doherty of Catlin, Ind. Thirteen grandchildren and one great grandchild also survive. The funeral will take place form the late residence at 2 o’clock on Wednesday and will be conducted by Rev. B.E. Antrobus, pastor of the First Baptist Church of which the deceased was a member. The interment will take place in the Masonic Cemetery. - thanks to Kim H.

McPherson Post, GAR will attend the funeral services for the late William D. Sering, which will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the home, 1006 E Main Street. Mr. Sering was an honored member of the post, having served with credit to himself and country in the war of the rebellion.  He was in the 10t hregiment, 16th Indiana battery and for about three years bore arms against the enemies of the Union.  Mr. Sering was born in Ohio, March 4, 1844 being 66 years old at the time of his death.  He was the son of Miller and Rebecca Sering, who were formerly residents of Kentucky. He came to Montgomery County in an early day and settled in Alamo, enlisting in the Civil War from that place. At the close of the war he came to Crawfordsville and for several years was engaged in the grocery business but later learned to carpenter and machinist trades.  He was married to Miss Elizabeth Burke and the widow, with 8 children survive. The children are: Mrs. MJ Doherty of Catlin; Mrs. Eugene Newell and Miss Ida both of this city; Claude Sering of Terre Haute; George Sering of Vincennes and Ralph & Walter Sering of Crawfordsville.  Mr. Sering had been in failing health for several years and retired from active life some time ago. Heart disease was the immediate cause of his death and he was fatally stricken Monday morning about 6 o’clock. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and Rev. BE Antrobus will conduct the services in his memory tomorrow afternoon.
