Chicago – Loss of $20,000 in war bonds, postal saving certificates and stocks has been reported to police by Herman Schweitzer, 59 and his wife, Anna who sold their grocery store at Webster, iowa a month ago. The Schweitzers who said they came here to buy a delicatessen store reported the money was taken from their automobile along with boxes of clothing, a radio and other household goods.

Chicago – Farmer Herman Schweitzer from Webster City, Iowa came to town to buy a delicatessen. He drove his car. In the car was an old box and in the box was $21,072.51 in government bonds. He parked his car across the street from his hotel. He cranked up the windows, slept peacefully Friday night in his room.  Saturday he told police someone had stolen the bonds from his car. Police asked why he hadn’t taken better precautions. “Wy in Webster City, he protested, we don’t lock our doors or windows against anybody.”

Chicago May 11 – Herman Schweitzer, 59, and his wife, Anna who sold their grocery store in Webster City, Iowa a month ago and came to Chicago to buy a delicatessen store, reported today to police that their automobile was looted last night of $20,000 in war bonds, postal savings certificates and stocks. Two boxes of clothing, a radio, two pairs of binoculars, an electric iron and other household good also were taken, they said. Police said Schweitzer told them he had been unable to find a permanent place to live and left most of their belongings in their car to facilitate moving. They left the car outside the Walden Arms Hotel where they have lived for a week. Schweitzer said they will go back to Webster City.
