A large concourse of friends and relatives attended the funeral services for John M. Schultz which were held this (Thursday) afternoon at Center Presbyterian Church. The esteem in which he was held was attested to by the many beautiful flora offerings. Rev. Walter Johnston conducted the services and the pall bearers were: Walter F. Hulet, James Johnson, Sol Tannenbaum, Charles Goltra, AD Thomas and Chase Harding, Mrs. D Hessler and Mrs. WF Hulet sang Nearer, My God to Thee, Some Time We’ll understand and Lead Kindly Light. Burial was made in Oak Hill Cemetery. ? John M. Schultz, aged 67 years, died suddenly at his home on West Main Street, Saturday afternoon about 12:30 o’clock after an illness of some time. Paralysis was the immediate cause of death. Just a few weeks ago Mr. Schultz, after having lost the use of his voice for several years, suddenly regained its use. For about two weeks, he had been ill with la grippe and this is believed to have hastened the end. Mr. Schultz prepared his obituary before his death and it is as follows: John M. Schultz, was born in Hoarn, Holland, Oct 13, 1842 and came to America with his parents in August 1854, settling in Lafayette, Ind. After attending school 9 months he started to learn the cigar makers’ trade. He came to Crawfordsville in 1862 and remained in the cigar business until 1877, after which he carried on a grocery and baking business for about two years. On April 5, 1890, he began to read law with Judge Albert D. Thomas and was admitted to the Montgomery County bar May 13, 1882. In July 1882, he became a partner with Austin P. Reynolds in real estate, loan and insurance business. After Mr. Reynolds became county clerk, Mr. Schultz formed a partnership with Alexander F. Ramsey and later with Walter F. Hulet with whom he remained until 1894 when he retired. Mrs. Schultz died Feb 2, 1896 and four children survive their father: :Florence and Arthur, of Crawfordsville, John J. Schultz who is a dentist in San Francisco and Jereome of Oregon. Funeral services have not been arranged but will be held probably Wednesday, conducted by Rev. Walter Johnston, of Center Presbyterian Church of which Mr. Schultz was a member. - transcribed by kbz
