Sawyer - James 1912

Source: Crawfordsville Daily Journal 11 Jan 1912

James Sawyer, an aged retired farmer who spent practically all of his life on a farm on the opposite side of Rock River from the Shades but who has been unable to farm for the past few years on account of his health died Wednesday afternoon at 2:50 at 1108 East Main Street.  He had only been ill one week and death was caused by kidney and heart trouble.  Mr. Sawyer was born in Ireland about 84 years ago and came to this country when a young man.  He was married to Miss Dingvall of Waveland December 21, 1858.  Mrs. Sawyer died a few years ago. The deceased had been a resident of this city only a short time, having resided with Robert Myers of near Wallace for a few years since the death of his wife.  For a time after Mrs. Sawyer died Mr. Sawyer and his daughter Miss Nancy Sawyer lived at the old home place.  When they gave up housekeeping he resided with relatives for a while and after that boarded with Mr. Myers referred to above. The deceased was a man of strong convictions and he did not hesitate to express an opinion.  He was an excellent farmer and made money in his vigorous days while he raised his family.  Most men would have done well under the circumstances to provide for their family.  He was an uncompromising Republican and his voice was raised for his party whenever opportunity offered.  When coming to this country in an early day he met Hannah Dingvall, who was then a handsome Scotch lassie. The friendship started under such romantic condition developed into love that resulted later in a happy marriage.  Short services will be held at the Barnhill undertaking parlors Saturday morning at 9, after which the remains will be taken to Alamo where the funeral will be held from the Christian Church.  Rev. FL Petit of Lafayette will officiate and interment will be made in the Alamo cemetery. – thanks to JoAn Oppy and Dellie Craig 😊  You two rock!
