DARLINGTON -- John C. Saidla, 63, formerly of this community, died at 9 a.m. Friday at his home, 127 S. Ninth St., in Chesterton, Ind., after an illness of several months. Born July 28, 1901 in Darlington, he was a son of Byrd and Leota Hiatt Saidla. He was married in Crawfordsville July 12, 1922 to Mildred Easley, who survives. He left Darlington for LaPorte in 1922. He was in the electrical business until 1939. During 1930-34 he was superintendent of the county powerhouse at LaPorte. In 1936 he started the Atlas Manufacturing Co. which he moved to Chesterton in 1939. Mr. Saidla owned a roller skating rink, photography business and ceramic and craft studio in Chesterton and was well known for portrait photography. He was a member of the Congregational Christian Church in Darlington. Surviving besides the wife are a daughter, Mrs. Ila Joan Summers of Chesterton; a son, Charles Saidla of Los Angeles; two aunts, Mrs. John Lynch of Darlington and Mrs. Carl Anderson of Fort Worth, Tex.; two uncles, Ralph W. Hiatt of Frankfort and John Saidla of Chicago, and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Collyn, in 1942. Services are announced for 8:30 p.m. Monday at the Carl Edwards Funeral Home in Chesterton. Friends may call beginning at noon Tuesday at the Bright Funeral Home in Darlington, where services are set for 2 p.m. Tuesday. Rev. Jack Ross of the South Haven Christian Church at Chesterton will be the minister and burial will be in Darlington IOOF Cemetery. -- thanks to Sue P for this one :)

Chesterton – John C. Saidla, 63, 127 S. 9th Street, a prominent Chesterton businessman, died at 9 a.m. today in his home after a lengthy illness. Saidla came to Chesterton in 1939 from LaPorte. He was owner of the Atlas Manufacturing Company which was moved from LaPorte to north Porter County that year. The company began its original operations in LaPorte in 1936. In 1946, he opened the Atlas Roller Rink in Chesterton and in 1946 started the operations of a photographic studio, ceramics and art shop. A “ham” radio operator, Saidla was a member of the Radio Club in LaPorte. He was a member of the Civil Air Patrol and Knights of Pythias. Born in Darlington, Ind, July 28, 1901, he was the son of Byrd and Leota (Hiatt) Saidla. On July 12, 1922, in Crawfordsville, Ind, he married Mary Easley, who survives. Surviving besides the widow and one daughter, Mrs Ila Joan Summers, Chesterton; one son, Charles Byrdal Saidla, Los Angeles; and five grandchildren. One son, John Collyn Jr preceded him in death in 1942. Services will be held at 8:30 p.m. Monday in the Carl Edmonds Funeral Home and at 2 pm. Tuesday in Bright Funeral Home in Darlington. The Rev. Jack Ross, South Haven Christian Church will officiate. Burial will be in the Darlington Cemetery. Friends may call at the Edmonds Funeral Home after 7 p.m. Sunday.
