Crawfordsville, Ind March 16 – John E. Ryan, 80 years old, died at his home after a lingering illness due to the infirmities of age. Ryan formerly lived in Arkansas and at one time was a US Collector of Revenue there. For years, he travelled for a tobacco firm with headquarters in Pine Bluff, Ark and was known all over the Middle West by his signature on hotel registers as, “The Mayor of Rob Roy.” He was a famous story teller and the name was given him from one of his well known stories about the town of Rob Roy, a flag station in Arkansas whose immense population, as related by Ryan was based on a count of the mosquitos there. Ryan retired from active business about 10 years ago. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Minnie E. Ryan and his step son, Circuit Attorney Howard Sidener of St. Louis, Missouri. - kbz
