NEWTOWN — Carl L. Royal, 80, a retired Swift & Co. employe and a resident of near Newtown, died at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Veterans Hospital at Indianapolis. He had been a patient 15 months and had a leg amputated three months ago. He was an exhibitor of fancy breeds of chickens. He attended Newtown High School, was a World War I veteran, and a member of the Quigle-Palin American Legion Post. He also was a member of the Presbyterian Church and the Shrine and Scotish Rite at Cleveland, Ohio. He was born southwest of Newtown on Sept. 20, 1880, the son of Walter and Verna Meeker Royal. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Leah Middleton of Homewood, Ill., and Mrs. Wretha Kerr of Newtown; three nieces, and three nephews. He was preceded in death by three wives, a sister and a brother. Services will conducted at Mauf Funeral Home at Attica at 2 p.m. Wednesday with Rev. Vernon Seaton officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery west of Newtown. Royal, 81, resident of the Newtown area and a retired employe of the Swift & Co. meat department in Cleveland, Ohio, died at 12:30 p.m. Saturday (July 17, 1971) at the 10th Street Veterans Administration Hospital in Indianapolis. He was a patient 15 months and had a leg amputated three months ago. He was known as a fancier and exhibitor of various kinds of chickens. Born on the Royal farm southwest of Newtown Sept. 20, 1891, he was the son of Walter and Verna Meeker Royal. He attended Newtown High School. Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Bruce (Leah) Middleton of Homewood, Ill., and Mrs. R. C. (Wreatha) Kerr of Newtown, and three nieces and three nephews. Three wives, a sister and brother preceded him in death. A veteran of World War I, he was a member of the Quigle-Palin American Legion Post in Newtown, the Shrine and Scottish Rite in Cleveland and the Newtown Presbyterian Church. Royal, 81, who died Saturday at the 10th Street Veterans Administration Hospital in Indianapolis. The Rev. Vernon Seaton will officiate. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, west of Newtown. Carl served from December 15, 1917 to May 13, 1919. According to his WWI Draft Registration he lived at 208 S. Lincoln in Brazil and was self-employed and single. He was born Sept 20, 1889 in Newtown, Indiana. He was short, stout and had brown eyes and hair.
He first married Norma who passed away in 1929; later to Doris Dennison (14 Jan 1933 in Cuyahoga County, Ohio) and they lived in Cleveland.
He was a salesman for a dress company then later the Swift Beef Company.
