Obituary: Died – near Alamo in this county, on the 8th inst, Charles Rountree in the 84th year of his age. The deceased was born in the north of Ireland, Dec 24, 1783 and with his wife came to this country in 1804. He settled in NC and remained there until the year 1821 from whence he removed to Butler County, Ohio. From Ohio with his family consisting of four sons and three daughter he came to this county in 1827 just 40 years ago when this part of Indiana was an unbroken forest. The deceased has been a consistent and exemplary member of the Methodist Episcopal Church for more than 70 years, having united himself with it but 12 years of age. The church of his choice was then in its infancy and was called “Methodist” in derision but he lived to see it a mighty power for good, taking its stand first among the great religious institutions of his adopted country.
The deceased has frequently told the writer of this poor tribute of respect that he had often listened to the preaching of the gifted Whitfield and the great Dr. Coke before he left Ireland and his memory was so retentive of past events almost to the hour of his death, that he could repeat texts of scripture and sermons, almost verbatim which he had hear more than 60 years ago. As in religion he was unwavering in his politics, the uncompromising enemy of African slavery and the Democratic party, he was the true friend of the downtrodden and the oppressed. The great care of his life, to use his own language, “was to get ready to die,” and as he had lived true to his Redeemer and loyal to his adopted country, he died as he had lived and leaves to his surviving companion who will soon follow him, his children and grandchildren unmistakable evidence that he has gone to that “rest that remains for the people of God.” - kbz
