Harold A. Roth, former Montgomery County sheriff, clerk-treasurer of Crawfordsville and superintendent of the Indiana Penal Farm, was fatally stricken Wednesday evening while mowing the lawn at his home in Princeton. He was 63 years old. Mr. Roth had operated the Roth Paint and Wallpaper Store in Princeton the past 11 years. Mr. Roth came to Crawfordsville as district clerk for the State Highway Commission on March 3, 1930. He held that position until 1933 when he was employed by the Public Service Commission of Indiana. He became deputy sheriff Jan. 1, 1936, serving until Jan. 1, 1940, when he was sworn in as sheriff. He was re-elected sheriff in the 1940 election and served until Dec. 31. 1943. Mr. Roth served during World War II in the U.S. Army. Following his discharge, he was appointed chief clerk at the State Farm, serving there 3 1/2 years. Returning to Crawfordsville at that time, Mr. Roth joined the staff of the Citizens National Bank. He was elected to the city clerk-treasurer position in the 1951 election and served from Jan. 1, 1952, until his appointment to the State Farm in March of 1953. Mr. Roth was a member of the Elks Lodge, American Legion, 40 & 8, St. Joseph Catholic Church at Princeton, Knights of Columbus, DAV Chapter 18 at Princeton, Lions Club, Princeton Retail Merchants Association and the Princeton Chamber of Commerce. He was born July 1, 1906, at Frankfort, a son or Mr. and Mrs. Albert Roth, who survive. Also surviving are his widow, Madeline E.; a son, Donald of Crawfordsville, and six grandchildren. Mr. Roth's parents resided with him at Princeton. Funeral services will be conducted at 9 a.m. (EST) Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church at Princeton. Graveside rites will be conducted at Cavalry Cemetery here at 3 p.m. (EDT) Saturday. Friends may pay respects at the Kendall Funeral Home in Princeton after 3 p.m. Friday.
