Rogers - John

John Rogers died at his home on West Main Street Sunday evening. He had been in very poor health for six months. He was the son of Samuel Rogers, the oldest child of 10. Two sisters and two brothers survive him. He was born in Putnam County on a farm near Bainbridge, May 15, 1830 where he lived until 18 years of age. Then he entered old Northwester College, now Butler University at Indianapolis. At an early age he learned cabinet making and carpenntry which he followed until he enlisted in the war of '63. He was honorably discharge on account of ill health. His first wife, who died May 15, 1 863 was Miss Edna Procter to this union one child was born that died in infancy. Oct 3, 1867 he was married to Miss Mary Jane Wilson by Elder O. P. Badger. He accept his Lord and Maste rin 1863 at the old Hebron Church south of Russellville. In a few years he contracted and built the Hebron Church. He was one of the main supporters of that church being deacon and elder and Sunday School Superintendent for a number of years. He continued his work until 1899 when he moved to Waveland, taking up the responsibility of the Lord's work at this place, until his hearing compelle dhim to step aside for keener ears. He has been deprived of church going for the last five year son account of ill health. But his faith never wavered even in his last days he was building an imaginary house of worship. Funeral services were conducted at the house on Main at 10 on Tuesday monring by Rev. MJ Smith. Burial in Russellville Cemetery was in charge of Waveland Lodge F & AM. - kbz
