Sophia Ann Davis, daughter of James and Lucy Davis and wife of Zachariah Robertson was born in Preble Co, Ohio Oct 20 1830. She was the 5th child in a family of 9. All died in infancy except Rachel, Lev and Sophia. She was the frailest of the family, outlived them all. Levi died at age 26 in NY where he was pursuing a medical education and Rachel died in Waveland at 16. Sophia came with her parents at the age of 4 to Parke County the farm now owned by Sam McNutt. The family then removed to Clinton which place many friends and relatives from the old Ohio home had settled. But the children aspired to a liberal education and with thought for the best welfare of the children, the parents returned to Waveland, where the children attended the Presbyterian Academy. Levi graduated from the institution but the delicate health of Anna and the early death of Rachel prevented their long attending school. Her father and mother both lived to an advanced age; the mother dying at 76 and father at 89. It was her great pleasure and comfort to minister to them during their declining years. She became a member of the Presbyterian Church when she was 17. No one who knew her daily life doubts for a moment that she lived and enjoyed true religion. By ill health denied the benefits of the public worship of God, but she sought to supply this lack by the reading of the Bible, printed sermons and religious papers. Her marriage to Zachariah Robertson occurred August 29, 1865. By this marriage she became stepmother to Thomas James; John and Ella all of whom survive her. Their steadfast love and respect for her prove how well she performed the difficult duties of a stepmother. To her were born two sons, Henry and Fred, who live to experience in her death their greatest sorrow. The chief features of her character were unselfishness and a most unusual devotion to the comfort and welfare of those about her. Her own convenience was always last in her thoughts. Her life from early womanhood was one constant struggle with disease, but through it all she continued her loving ministry for the good of her family. The funeral services at the home on Friday morning were conducted by Revs Gibson and Paxon. The body was interred in the New Cemetery. - kbz
