William E. Rider, 53, well known banker was found dead Monday night in the attic of his home shot through the mouth with a .32 calibre revolver.  Dr. T.Z. Ball, Montgomery County Coroner gave a verdict of suicide.

Mr. Rider, son of the founder of the Waynetown State Bank and former VP, had been forced to resign due to ill health and had been under care of a physician.

He was a veteran of WWI and had served as president of the Ben Hur Life Association of Crawfordsville and as state bank examiner.

He was born at Waynetown, son of WIlliam and Emma Epperson Rider. He was married at Indianapolis to Marie Gausephil who preceded him in death in 1928. He was later married to Mildred Peterson of Crawfordsville, who survives. He was a graduate of Waynetown HS and Wabash College.  Other survivors are a nephew, Clifford R. Bunnell and a niece, Mrs. George Gravett, both of Waynetown Funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. John Episcopal Church, Crawfordsville with Bishop Richard A. Kirchoffer, bishop of Indianapolis diocese officiating.  Burial was in Waynetown Masonic Cemetery.  --- transcribed by kbz

Waynetown, Nov 27 - William E. Rider, 53, a life time resident of Waynetown and prominent in business and banking circles here for many years, ended his life at his residence here at 9 o'clock Monday night.
Mr. Ride had been in declining health for many months,.  Born in Waynetown, Mr. Rider was the son of William Rider and Emma Epperson Rider, prominent residents of this community for years.  His father was
Waynetown's leading citizen in his day. Mr. Rider was graduated from Waynetown HS and later from Wabash College with t he class of 1916. He served in WWI. He was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity at Wabash.  He also held membership in the Masonic Lodge at Waynetown and he was a member of the chapter, the council and the commandery in Crawfordsville. He was also a member of the Crawfordsville Lodge of Elks and the Crawfordsville Country Club.  For many years he was connected with the Waynetown State Bank which his father had assisted in founding.  He resigned as vice president of the bank early this year. He had served for years as cashier of the bank. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of The Citizens National Bank of Crawfordsville.  For a number of years Mr. Rider served as a bank examiner in Indiana. In his work as an examiner he established the reputation of being most competent and thoroughly conversant with the intricacies of the banking business.

Sometime in 1941, Mr. Rider was appointed president of the Ben Hur Life Association and then in 1942, at the regular national convention of the association, he was elected president for a two year term, which he
served. Mr. Ride was twice married. His first wife was the former Marie Gausepohl of Indianapolis. her death occurred in 1928. Later he married Miss Mildred Peterson of Crawfordsville  who survives.

The only other survivors are a nephew, Clifford R. Bunnell and a niece, Mrs. George Gravett, both of Waynetown the son of daughter of his sister, Mrs. Minnie Bunnel who died here a few years ago. The body was taken to the Utterback & Bright Funeral Home in Crawfordsville, Monday night. The body will remain at the funeral home until the hour of the funeral services which will be conducted from the St. John's Episcopal Church at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon. Mr. Rider was a member of the Episcopal Church and had served the church as an officer. In charge of the services will be Bishop Richard Amslee Kirchoffer of Indianapolis.  Burial will be made int he Waynetown Masonic Cemetery in the family lot.
