Waynetown, Jan 21 - William E. Rider, one of the most widely known residents of Montgomery County, passed away here this morning at 4 o'clock. Mr. Rider had been ill but 10 days. The deceased was born near Odell in Tippecanoe County Sept 12, 1837. When but a young man he moved to the home of Santford Gray at Wesley. Mr. Rider was a veteran of the Civil War, having served 3 years in the Union Army. Following his honorable discharge from the service he returned to the Gray home and shortly afterward united in marriage with Miss Margarette Fields. To this union two children were born, one whom died in infancy. His first wife died in 1881 and later Mr. Rider married Miss Emma Epperson of Darlington. To this union two children were born, one of whom died quite young. William Rider, when young was what might be termed a poor boy. By industrious labor and keen business foresight the respected Waynetown citizen, however, amassed quite a fortune. For a number of years he was engaged in the hardware business and about 1890 he organized what is now known as the Waynetown State bank. He was named president o the institution which office he held until death. Mr. Rider was loved and respected by all who knew him and Waynetown loses one of its most valuable citizens in his passing. The deceased second wife died in August 1917. William Rider was a member of the Waynetown Christian Church. He belonged to numerous fraternal organizations being a member of the Masons, IOOF, Red Men and Eastern Star. He also belonged to a detective association. The deceased is survived by two children, Mrs. AR Bonnell and William Rider, Jr. Four grandchildren all of Waynetown, and three sisters survive.
