All of Waynetown and the people of this community generally were greatly surprised and shocked Sunday morning when it was announced that “Mother” Rider, as we have all known her for so long, had passed to her future reward in the silent hours of the night. That Mrs. Rider had been afflicted for many months was well known by everyone, but she lived so cheerfully, so happily, that no one had a thought that death was hovering so near, and that she was so soon to be called away. It was only on Friday in company with Mr. Rider, their son W. E. Rider and Miss Blanche Ellis that they made a trip to Indianapolis by automobile, returning home in the evening. Arriving home, she was tired of course, but otherwise seemed to stand the trip very well. Saturday evening she accompanied Mr. Rider and other members of the family on a short auto ride, but complained shortly after starting of not feeling well. They returned home, and she rapidly grew worse. Her physician from Crawfordsville was summoned hastily and everything possible done for her relief, but to no avail, and shortly passed the midnight hour her spirit took its flight to that home in the skies.

Emma Epperson Rider, daughter of Richard and Eleanor Rider, was born in Montgomery County, Indiana, near Whitesville, August 3, 1861; died in the early morning hours of August 20, 1916, aged 55 years and 17 days. She was the youngest of a family of eight children. She was yet a young girl when her mother died and she found a home with her brothers and sisters until August 3, 1882, when she was united in marriage to William Rider. To this union two children were born, a son and daughter, the daughter dying in infancy. It was under the pastorate of Rev. U. C. Brewer she united with the Christian Church of this place and lived the Christian life until her death. In her passing away she leaves to mourn a devoted husband and son, a stepdaughter, Mrs. A. J. Bunnell, two sisters, Mrs. Alice Harlan of Chicago, and Mrs. Flora Williams who for some time past made her home with the Rider family; two brothers, William Epperson of Frankfort, Ind., and Richard Epperson of Freeport, Kansas, besides many other relatives and a large circle of friends.

Mother Rider was a woman with the most kindly, pleasing pleasant disposition. At all times she had a kindly word and pleasant smile for everyone, and not a few of the unfortunate ones have been made to feel, and will long remember the warmth of her charitable kindness and her sweet words of comfort. In her church work she always felt the deepest interest and was a liberal contributor to all of its needs and work. The funeral services were conducted from the home Tuesday morning at 10 o’clock by Rev. W. D. Hedrick, pastor of the Christian Church, a very large company of relatives and friends being present to pay their last respect to one they loved. The floral tributes were many, the most gorgeous and beautiful—emblems of memory and the sweet hopes of a future meeting in that world amid the stars. Interment took place in the family lot in the Masonic Cemetery

Those from a distance present at the funeral were Arthur Pollett, wife and daughter, John Veach and wife, Riley, Ind., Marian Harlan, Chicago, William Epperson, wife and daughter, Frankfort, H. L. Harlan, Ella Secrest and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. L. W. Ellis and daughter, Emma, Indianapolis, Mr. and Mrs. F. M. McClure, Lafayette, Morris Herzog, Mrs. Myrta Foust, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Moore, Covington, Albert Leidendecker, Mrs. Amelia Leidendecker, Mrs. Mary McKee, Champaign, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. Ben Wilhite of Crawfordsville, and Mr. and Mrs. John D. Smith of New Market. -s
