Thomas Rice, 87, Former Chief Of Police Here Dies Thomas W. Rice, 87, former Montgomery County sheriff and former Crawfordsville chief of police, died Saturday afternoon in his home here. He had been in failing health four years. Born April 8, 1875 Mr. Rice was the son of Jonathan and Mary Glenn Rice. he married Zella Dee Patton of Browns Valley March 5, 1899. A native of Montgomery County and a resident of Crawfordsville most of his life, Mr. Rice served two terms as sheriff and two terms as chief of police. He also was a probation officer for Indiana State Prison at Michigan City for a number of years and owner and operator of the Crawfordsville Bus Line several years. Mr. Rice was a member of the Freedom Baptist Church and a 50-year member of Montgomery Lodge No. 50, F&AM. The widow, Mrs. Zella Rice survives. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the Hunt and Son Funeral Home. Rev. Carlton Christenson of the First Baptist Church will be the officiating minister. Burial will be at the Masonic Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 4 p.m. Monday.
