Rice - Thomas Roach
Source: Crawfordsville Journal, Feb 16, 1887
Last Saturday night, TR Rice, living in Sugar Creek Twp, near Bowers' Station, was run over and killed by the 5:44 Vandalia passenger train between Bowers Station and Darlington. Mr. Rice had been to this city on Sat. and boarded the accommodation train to go home. Instead of going on to Bowers' he got off at Darlington and walked up the track. He was intoxicated and had laid down to rest, and becoming numb could not get out of the way when he heard the train approaching. The engineer saw him and reversed his engine in time to save the mangling of the remains, but the pilot struck him in the head inflicting wounds from which he died in about an hour. He was taken aboard the train and carried back to Darlington where everything possible was done to save his life, but it was in vain. He leaves a family. - kbz
