Samuel Rice, one of the best known and most prominent citizens of Richland Township died last Friday night at about one o’clock at his home north of Mellott after an illness covering several months. He was the son of Napoleon B. Rice, a pioneer citizen of Richland Township and died near the old Rice homestead where he was born. He was 70 years old at his death. Mr. Rice had been twice married. His first marriage was to Alice Abolt and his second to Alice Reister, who survives him. Besides the widow, three daughters survive him: Mrs. Elmer Davidson, Mrs. Burt Hayes both of Mellott and Mrs. Willie Harris of near Stone Bluff. Two brothers and two sisters also survive him. They are Ike Rice of Browns Valley; John Rice of near Linden; Mrs. Kate Howard of Mellott and Mrs. Will Mortimore of Stone Bluff. Five grandchildren also survive him. Funeral services were held from the Baptist Church in Newtown Sunday morning. Rev. Broach, the pastor, assisted by the Methodist minister. Conducted the services. Interment was made in the Baptist cemetery south of Newtown.
