Mellott - Mrs. Ruth H. Rice, 58 died at 2:55 p.m. CST Tuesday in Culver Hospital. She had been ill 5 months of a brain tumor. Mrs. Rice was born Jan 25, 1898 in Fountain County, daughter of Frank Wallace and Nancy McAlister.On Feb 27, 1918 she was married to James W. (sic - James E) Rice, their marriage also taking place in Fountain County where she spent her entire life. She was a member of New Antioch Christian Church. She received her early education at Mellott and with her husband was in the grocery business there 12 years. She then did clerick work for Dr. George W. Crane at Hopkins Syndicate Corp until illness prevented. Surviving are 3 sons, James R. and Harold E both of Mellott and H. Lowell Rice of Newtown; a daughter, Mrs. Margaret Martin, Hillsboro; 9 grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Edith Strong, Logansport also several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Rice was preceded in death by her husband who died May 18, 1944. Funeral services were at 2:30 p.m. CDT, Friday in the North Christian Church, Mellott the Rev. Guy Walters, officiating and burial was in Waynetown Masonic Cemetery. The body lay in state an hour preceding the service and had reamined at the Servies Funeral Home until the funeral hour. --kbz
Source: The obituary is from a collection of newspaper (paper names not recorded) obituaries saved, by Fauniel Hershberger, during the 1950's, 60's, 70's and 80's. She was a life long resident of Fountain County Indiana. The collection is now housed at Crawfordsville District Public Library.
MELLOTT – Funeral services for Mrs. Ruth H. Rice were held at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the North Christian Church with Rev. Guy Walters officiating. Funeral hymns were played by Marjorie Linville, organist. Pallbearers were Ferman Rice, Reed Rice, Bob DeAth, Francis Strong, Lowell Linville, Virgil Knight and Reed Carpenter. Carrying the floral tributes were Melba Reisinger, Carol Ann Strong. June Cochran, Glee Haas, Dorothy McAlister, Gladys Cooper, Zelma Cleveland, Mary Agnes DeAth, Mary Evelyn Rice, Nina June Dice, Evelyn Strong, LaVera Rice, Vivian Rice, Mildred Kromm, Gladys Williams, Margaret Cooper, Doris Hines and Margaret Bever. Burial was in the Waynetown Masonic Cemetery. – jlr
