– Martha E. RICE, daughter of Adam and Martha E. HIPES, was born in Montgomery County March 9, 1851 and departed this life at her home, 504 Highland Avenue, this city at 4:30 a.m. Sunday Aug 16, 1931. She and William A. Rice were united in marriage Oct 31, 1867. There was born to this union 7 children: James; Charles; Henry; Edgar A; Minnie E; John W and Clay M. James died in early childhood; Minnie E. passed away in infancy and Charles departed life in 1925. 12 grandchildren and one great and one brother, William Armantrout of Frankfort, Indiana also survive. Mrs. Rice’s husband passed away Aug 11, 1911. Upon her marriage to Mr. Rice they engaged in farming and continued in this activity for nearly 40 years when Mr. Rice’s health failed. Then they moved to Crawfordsville and Mrs. Rice continued her residence here until her death. In her early girlhood days, Mrs. Rice became identified with the Christian Church and was a charter member of the New Market Christian Church. She remained a faithful and loyal member of that church until her removal to Crawfordsville when she became a member of the 1st Christian Church, Crawfordsville…her home was always a hospitable one, and her happiest moments were those spent with her children, grandchildren and friends. Truly, indeed here was a noble, pure and Christian character. She had built her hope upon the precious promises of her Saviour and went peaceably to sleep knowing that she would awaken in the loving and tender arms of her Lord. May we be supported by the trust that was hers, and may we exemplify in our own lives her Christian traits of character. kbz
