Jonathan Rice, a retired farmer, died at his home, on Whitlock avenue shortly after midnight Wednesday night. His sickness dates back to a period two years ago and was of a baffling nature that medical skill or change of climate did him no good. The direct cause of his death was heart failure brought about by spinal trouble. During the past summer he was taken to the home of a relative near Waveland, where it was thought his condition might be bettered. For years he was one of the prominent farmers of Brown township and resided near what is now Sycamore Park on the bank of Sugar Creek twelve miles southwest of this city. He was born in the same township and was a son of Wash Rice, one of the first settlers of this county. He was born August 1, 1842 and was therefore at the time of his death past sixty two years of age. A few years ago he sold his farm in Brown Township and removed to White county. He lived there a short time and returned to the county of his nativity. The deceased leaves a wife and two sons Albert Rice, who resides near New Market, and Thomas Rice of this city. The funeral party will leave this city a 8 o'clock Saturday morning and go to Freedom church, southwest of this city, near the early home of the deceased, where the funeral will be conducted at 10 o'clock by Rev. Mr. Henson and Rev. Mr. McKenzie, of the Baptist church. Interment at Freedom Church cemetery. He was a soldier of the late civil war and belonged to the Fortieth Indiana regiment. He was a man of many fine qualities and stood close in the hearts of a large number of friends. - thanks to Sue P for this one :)
