Rice - Ellen - 1874

Source: Crawfordsville Weekly Journal Saturday, 24 October 1874

Ellen Rice, daughter of William and Mary Rice, was born November 29, 1864. Her mother died when she was one month old, and she was then adopted in the family of the writer. She joined the Methodist Church at Bethel, in Sugar Creek Township, Montgomery County, in the eighth year of her age, and ever after maintained a consistent Christian character and devoted life, by attending all the means of grace and private prayer, kneeling at her bedside before retiring to rest. She died of typhoid fever at the residence of the writer October 15, 1874.

She was a good girl, amiable, intelligent and beloved. She was always the favorite of her Uncle John. Nothing serious was at first apprehended, but it was soon discovered that she was rapidly sinking with typhoid fever. Every attention was given by her friends for her recovery, but the remedies were unavailing. As a child she was kind, loving and obedient. It seems mysterious that a child of such genial and pleasant social qualities should be stricken down in the morning of life. Her death is deeply felt by all her friends who are left to mourn their loss.
