Rice - Eliza Poynts

Mrs. Eliza Jane Rice, widow of Martin Rice, for years a resident of Crawfordsville, died at 9 o'clock Monday night at the home of her daughter. Mrs. Jacob Voris, in Tippecanoe county, northeast of Linden following an illness of five weeks duration due to the infirmities of old age. Mrs. Rice was 83 years of age. Her husband, who was a brick mason in this city for years, died a number of years ago. Mrs. Rice was born March 14, 1827, in Fayette county, Kentucky, and was the daughter of John [James] and Rebecca (Ross) Poynts. She came to Montgomery county to live in 1850, residing here continuously for 70 years. Fort forty-five years, Mrs. Rice lived in this city, at 211South Walnut street. Six months age she went to the home of her son-in-law and daughter to live, on account of her extreme old age. Mrs. Rice was a lifelong member of the Christian church and was a good woman, respected by all who knew her. She was married to Martin Rice in Kentucky. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Jacob Voris, and one grandchild, Fred R. Voris. Three children are dead. She also had one brother and two sister, all of whom are now dead. Funeral services for Mrs. Rice will be held at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon in the chapel at D. C. Barnhill's undertaking parlors on West Main street in Crawfordsville. The Rev. Plunkett will have charge. Burial will take place in the Odd Fellows' cemetery. The pall bearers, all nephews of Mrs. Rice, will be Edgar A. Rice, John Rice, Henry Rice and Clay Rice, all of this city, and Albert Armantrout and John Childers, both of New Richmond.
