Crawfordsville, July 17 – Hon. Edgar A. Rice, 67, judge of the Montgomery Circuit Court since January 1, 1929 died of heart trouble at Culver Hospital yesterday.  Lifelong republican and active e in party affairs in Indiana, he was elected to the circuit bench in 1928, succeeding the late Jere West, a democrat.  Born near Crawfordsville, Judge Rice after graduating from Indiana Central Normal school at Danville was for four years a school teacher.  Jan 1, 1902 he became deputy county clerk and served for 8 years after which he was twice elected county clerk. Following his retirement from the clerk’s office, he became secretary-treasurer of the Crawfordsville Investment company and secretary of the Union Savings and Loan Association and began to practice law.  He was elected to the bench for the third time in 1940. His death creates a vacancy which the governor will fill.  Judge Rice belonged to the First Christian Church and for more than 40 years was superintendent of the Sunday School.  He also belonged to the Masonic Order POS of A; Elks; Knights of Pythias; IOOF; Modern Woodmen; Ben Hur; Kiwanis; Ouiatenon and Country clubs.  His wife, formerly Ona May Surface died several years ago.  Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Helen E. Schaaf, Jamestown and Mrs. Meredith L. Husted, Crawfordsville; and two brothers, John W. Rice and Clay M. Rice, Crawfordsville.  Services at the First Christian Church 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. Body at Proffitt & Sons Funeral Home until Tuesday morning when it will be taken to the residence. – kbz

Crawfordsville, July 17 – Courthouse officials will pay tribute Wednesday at funeral rites for Edgar A. Rice, 67, judge of Montgomery Circuit Court since 1929 whose death occurred Sunday. Rites will be held at 10:30 a.m.  Burial will be here.  He had served as clerk and deputy clerk of the court for 16 years prior to his election on the Republican ticket in 1928.  Judge Rice succeeded the late Judge Jere West, a Democrat who had held the office more than a quarter of a century. In 1902, Judge Rice married Miss Ona Surface.  She died a few years ago.  In his youth the veteran juror was a teacher in the Montgomery County schools.  He later entered business in Crawfordsville and also practice law.  Throughout his life he was interested in fraternal affairs and he was renowned as a speaker and was invited frequently to deliver the addresses at patriotic functions.  Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Helen Schaaf of Jamestown and Mrs. Meredith Husted of Crawfordsville.  – kbz
