Clay M. Rice, 81, died Monday after an illness of five years. Mr. Rice was for many years a building contractor here. He was a graduate of Crawfordsville High School and had attended Wabash College. He served in the U.S. Army in England during World War I. He was a member of the Christian Church here. A Montgomery County native, he was born April 5, 1886, William A. and Martha (Hipes) Rice. His first marriage was Nov. 24, 1909, to Nellie Douglas. She died May 4, 1949. On March 8, 1952 he was married to Opal (Friend) Martin at Terre Haute. Surviving are the widow; three daughters, Mrs. Fern Boots of Rt. 7 Crawfordsville, Mrs. Mildred Stickley of Rt. 6 Crawfordsville and Mrs. Reba Wyant of Marion; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Noble Reeves Funeral Home at New Market with Rev. Howard Miller officiating. Burial will be in Masonic Cemetery at Crawfordsville.
