MELLOTT — Clarence J. Rice, 85, a retired trucker, died Thursday in Lakeview Hospital, at Danville, Ill., where he had been a patient for three days. He had been in failing health for two years. Mr. Rice was a member of New Antioch Christian Church. He attended Newtown and Mellott elementary schools. He was born Aug. 25, 1885, near Devil's Backbone in Montgomery County to James W. and Florence Keyt Rice. On May 27, 1905, he was married to Clara Wade in her Mellott home. Surviving are his widow; four sons, Ralph E. Rice of Scotts Bluff, Neb., Ferman "Fuzzy" Rice and Reed Rice, both of Mellott, and James C. Rice of Wilmington, Del.; two daughters, Miss Mary Evelyn Rice, at home and Mrs. Forest (Pearl) Murdock of Murray, Ky.; two sisters, Mrs. Hazel Riester of Mellott and Miss Waneta Rice of Hillsboro; a brother, Grover C. Rice of Fairmont, Ill.; 17 grandhildren; 41 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Mr. Rice was preceded in death by four sisters, a brother and a grandson who with his wife and daughter were fatally injured in a traffic accident. Services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in Crumley-Williams Funeral Home at Hillsboro. Rev. Hugh Dooley of Crawfordsville will officiate. Burial will be in Masonic Cemetery at Waynetown. Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 p.m. Saturday. --typed by Walt W
