Bert Rice was fatally injured on Saturday morning. He was engineer on a northbound freight out of Terre Haute. There was a hot box on the tender. Just this side of Rosedale, as Rice was leaning out of the cab looking back at this box, his head struck on the truss of a bridge. His skull was fractured 2/3 around in front and on the left side. His foot caught in the throttle quadrant or he would have been thrown from the cab. He was taken to TH where an operation was performed. This gave no relief. He did not regain consciousness but died on Tuesday morning at 10:45. Funeral services were held at Logansport this afternoon at 2:30 in charge of the Masons and Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. Interment at Oak Hill. Bert Rice was the second son of John H. and Lettie Jones Rice. He was born in the house just west of the hotel, April 8, 1884. He was educated in the Waveland schools. When he was 21 he entered the service of the Vandalia and has been a valued employee for 13 years, during which time there has never been a mark against his record. May 12, 1910 he married Miss Myrtle MOREHART of Logansport. She survives with two children, Mary Jane age 2, and Charles Richard, 6 weeks. Bert Rice was well liked by all with whom he came in contact. Whatever came, he met it with a smile, and a cheerful word. His sudden taking off in the prime of manhood was a shock to the whole community in which he spent his boyhood days. Besides the wife and children, he is survived by 3 brothers: Jasper of Marshall; Guy of Decatur, Illinois, now in army service; Fred of Logansport and by two sisters, Mrs. Nettie English of Clinton, Ill and Miss Juanita of Waveland and a stepbrother, Harry Galey. Mr. & Mrs. John Rice and Miss Juanita and Mr. & Mrs. Harry Galey attended the funeral. - kbz
