Jacob Rhoades, who died in the south part of this township and was buried here last week, was one of the early settlers and probably the largest man in the township, as his weight was about 450 pounds. A short time before he died two of our prominent business men were heard lamenting over the fact that the old soldiers at this place drew so much money from the government, $1,300 per quarter, would soon bankrupt the whole country. Now at least $1,000 of that money is in the hands of the merchants as soon as cashed, and the whole town of Darlington is profited thereby and not one in the town any the poorer. These same men were stout, able bodied men at the time men were needed, and if they had done their duty I wonder what their opinion would be on the subject.
