John Remley died January 2 at the age of 78 years, 7 months and 11 days. He was born near Twenty Mile Stand, Ohio May 21, 1800. At 12, his father died and left him a poor boy. He served 5 years as an apprentice at the tanners trade, after which he worked by the month till he had accumulated enough money to come to this county. In March 1825, he was married to Miss Sarah McCain at Lebanon, Ohio and in the following April removed from there to Crawfordsville. Soon after his arrival he walked out to his present location and bought 80 acres of land. The cane with which he walked out, with the date which he cut on it, is still in possession of the family. He never removed from the place where he first settled. He was thus one of the oldest citizens in the county. Quiet, unassuming, always industrious, always honest he grew in material prosperity and was universally respected. He was the last one left of all those early pioneers who settled in this bend of the creek. He united with the Presbyterian Church of Crawfordsville in Feb 1841, and lived a consistent Christian till the time of his death serving the church as elder more than 20 years. - kbz
