Source: Crawfordsville Daily Journal 28 July 1881

James K. Reckard died at his residence 4 miles NE of Crawfordsville on Tuesday night, July 26, at near midnight. He leaves a wife and two children. He was a son-in-law of Samuel Hutton and had lived in Montgomery County the great part of his life. He was 33 years of age and died from cancer of the throat after great suffering. His funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon at 4 o'clock p.m. services by Rev. GW Stafford. Mr. Reckard was a young man of good education and left a pathetic poem behind, a final verse of which is worth a publication. "And now farewell, my children dear, And wife so kind and true, I'm going home, where I will watch Through the gate ajar for you!"
