WINGATE — James E. Read, 78, of Miami, Fla., a retired Wingate farmer, died at Home Hospital in Lafayette at 8 a.m. Wednesday. He had been ill for two months and hospitalized for three weeks. Read owned and operated a farm in the Wingate area from 1934 until his retirement last September when he moved to Florida. He came to Wingate after 19 years' residence in Fowler. He was a member of the Evangelical Church in Central, Ind., and also a member of the Modern Woodman of America of Corydon. A son of John and Margaret Read, he was born in Corydon April 9, 1889. He was married to Lea Tindall on May 19, 1907. Surviving are the wife; three daughters, Mrs. Joe Ulm of Whiting, Mrs. Peter Rasmussen of New Buffalo, Mich. and Mrs. Marjorie Marks of West Lafayette; a brother, Ray Read of Bay Minette, Ala.; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the Hippensteel Funeral Home in Lafayette with Rev. Richard Bowman officiating. Burial will be in West Point Cemetery.
