Leland C. "Red" Rafferty, 61 of Rt 1, Crawfordsville, a former Crawfordsville fire chief, died at 2 p.m. Friday in University Hospital at Indianapolis of a heart attack.  A member of the Christian Church, he was also active in Montgomery Lodge 50 F&AM, Indianapolis Valley Scottish Rite, Murat Shrine, Montgomery County Shrine Club, Ben Hur Floaters, American Legion 408 ? Order of Eastern Star and VFW.

Educated in New Richmond and Linden Schools, he served in the Navy from 1942-45. He retired from the Crawfordsville Fire Department in 1968.  He served as Chief there from 1960-63 and worked for the State Fire Marshall's Office until 1960.  Mr. Rafferty was born March 6, 1921 at New Richmond, a son of Lester and Raw Livington Rafferty.  He married Gertrude Moore Dec 24, 1941 at Crawfordsville.  She survives.  Other survivors are his mother and stepfather, Rae and William Simmons of Linden; two brothers, Charles of Indianapolis and Lester Jr. of Lafayette; one sister, Evelyn Brandlein of Indianapolis; four nephews, one niece.  

Services will be at 3 p.m. Monday in Hunt & Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Dorman Winger officiating. Burial will be in Waynetown Masonic Cemetery. Masonic rites will be at 8 p.m. Sunday. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Sunday. - kbz
