Staff Sgt Vance Pyle, 25, was Killed In Action in France on July 28, according to word received by his wife and parents from the War Department. He was the son of Georeg and Cloe McClain Pyle
Sgt. Pyle graduated from Darlington HS in 1936 and starred in basketball while attending. He entered the Army on Dec 30, 1941 and was a member of the 35th Infantry divisiom of the 3rd Army with Lt. Gen. George Patton.
The survivors include the wife; parents; a brother, Horace W> Pyle and three sisters, Miss Myrdell Pyle, Mrs. Maxine Blaydes and Mrs. Janice Campbell.

Funeral services for Staff Sgt. Vance Pyle, whose body was returned to this country recently from the American Military Cemetery at Marigny, France will be held at 2 o’clock Friday at the home of the parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Pyle, RFD 7, Crawfordsville. Burial will be at the Masonic Cemetery with the Darlington Post of the American Legion to conduct military rites at the graveside, Rev. John Servies will be the officiating minister. The body scheduled to arrive here at 5:07 p.m. Thursday will be taken to the home of the parents where friends may pay their respects. A native of Parke County and graduate of the Darlington HS, Sgt. Pyle was killed July 28, 1944 in the battle of St. Lo while serving with the 33th Infantry Division. He enlisted Dec 31, 1941 and was sent overseas in May 1944 after training in California. He was awarded the Purple Heart and a presidential citation posthumously. Born in August 1918, near Milligan, Sgt Pyle married Marguerite Petty of Mace Sept 6, 1941. Surviving besides the parents are the widow, a son Vance Lee Pyle; one brother, Harold W. Pyle of Rockville; three sisters, Mrs. Ray Ferguson of Russellville, Mrs. Chauncey Blaydes of Parkersburg and Mrs. Robert Campbell of Crawfordsille and a grandmother, Mrs. Jacob McClain of near Milligan.
