Meredith Marie Proffitt, 56, wife of Asher L. Proffitt, retired Crawfordsville funeral director, died at 8:17 p.m. Thursday in Culver Hospital, where she had been a patient nearly two week. A native of Montgomery County, she was a daughter of Andrew and Minnie Middleton Pickel and was born Jan. 29, 1907. Mrs. Proffitt was a member of the First Baptist Church, an officer in the Order of Eastern Star at Alamo, president of the Hospital Guild, a past president of the Montgomery County Home Demonstration Club, and a member of the Women of the Moose, Ladies Auxiliary of the Eagles Lodge, the American Legion Auxiliary and Royal Neighbors of America. She was a graduate of Crawfordsville High School. She operated a beauty parlor in Indianapolis for 10 years. She married Mr. Proffitt Aug. 31, 1946. Surviving besides the husband are two stepsons, James W. and Fred L. Proffitt of Crawfordsville; six grandchildren; three brothers, Merle Picket of Columbia City and Marvin Pickel of Chesterfield, and nieces and nephews. Funeral services are announced for 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Hunt & Son Funeral Home, with Rev. John Servies and Rev. Carlton Christenson officiating, and burial in New Ross Cemetery. Friends may call after 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
