Powers - Lovia Fields

Lovia Fields was born in Pennsylvania Jan 11, 1797, and was married in Butler County, Ohio to Jonathan W. POWERS on the 27th of July 1815 by Elder Wilson Thompson. She departed this life on the 18th of April 1883 at Loda, Illinois, the home of her daughter, Mrs. DN Morgan. Her remains were brought to Crawfordsville, Ind. for interment by the side of her husband, who died about 28 years ago. She was the mother of 12 children, 5 of whom survive her. I desire to offer a tribute to the memory of this precious Mother in Israel, who is the last one of the old saints that belonged to the Sugar Creek Church in Crawfordsville ever since the year of its constitution in 1823. For 60 years she has been a faithful member sharing the joys and sorrows of her brothers and sisters. She was very hospitable and generous to the poor, not forgetful to entertain strangers, and ever ready to speak of the blessed Master and His meek and lowly followers. The last years of her life were accompanied with disease and pain so that she was not able to meet with the Church, but she was patient and cheerful, and often sent word to her Brethren to remember her in their worship. At one time, she said, "When you meet sing the hymn beginning "Sweet rivers of redeeming love, lie just before mine eyes," and I will get my bible and hymn book and try to serve only God at home. The day of the funeral was a balmy, warm day, the very air seemed full of praise and thanksgiving. I thought of this shock of corn fully ripe now safely garnered "The happy soul softly passed, her weary warfare here, arrived at Jesus' feet at last, all ended all here care." Paul says, "For I see how that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us." Elder MM VanCleave preached on the occasion, from a part of Revelations. He spoke very feelingly of the dead departed mother, then they sang one of her favorite hymns. "How firm a foundation ye saints of the Lord, is laid for your faith in His excellent word." The daughters and sons will miss their dear patient mother. Her seat will be empty, we shall all feel lonely but we must look "Beyond the vale of tears, there is a life above, unmeasured by the fight of years, and all that life is love." - kbz

Mrs. Lovia Powers relict of Jonathan Powers of this city, died at Lods (?), Illinois Wed. at the residence of her daughters, Mrs. Morgan. Mrs. Powers was the mother of I. Powers of this city and at the time of her death was 86 years of age. The funeral services were conducted from the residence of Ira McConnell, Elder VanCleave, officiating.
