John I. Powell, 85, last surviving Civil war veteran of Walnut township, expired at 11:30 o'clock Sunday morning at his home in New Ross. Mr. Powell's death was attributed to a complication of diseases. The deceased was born Oct. 12, 1849, in Walnut township, Montgomery County, the son of John and Elizabeth [Welch] Powell. He was married to Elizabeth Snyder over sixty years ago. Mr. Powell was a member of the Christian Church at Jamestown and the Odd Fellows fraternal order. His death leaves only six Civil war veterans now living in Montgomery County. Mr. Powell was well-known and highly respected throughout this County. He operated a farm in this vicinity for a number of years before moving to Lawton, Okla. He returned to Indiana and established his residence in New Ross several years ago. Surviving, in addition to the wife, are two daughters, Mrs. Charles Routh, of New Ross, and Mrs. Ruth Neese, of Oklahoma; a brother, Elmer Powell, of Danville, Ind., and several nieces and nephew. Funeral services have not been completed, pending word from the daughter in Oklahoma.
