New Ross, Indiana -- George W. Powell, seventy-three years old, one of the best known farmers in Montgomery County, died at one Sunday morning at this home in New Ross after an extended illness with a complication of diseases. He had resided in the County all his life. Mr. Powell was born near Parkersburg, April 1, 1842, and a few years later removed with his parents to the home farm, two miles north of New Ross, which farm he owned at the time of his death. When the great war of the rebellion broke out he enlisted in the 10 th Indiana Regiment, in the three months' service. At the expiration of his term of service he re-enlisted and was assigned to the position of clerk. Mr. Powell saw active service at Pea Ridge and Helena, Ark., and other smaller engagements. Mr. Powell was married to Miss Henrietta Beck in 1866. One daughter, Mrs. Eunice Porter, was the result of this union. In 1868 or 1870 he served one term as trustee of Walnut township. Mr. Powell was a large owner of real estate, possessing over 400 acres of land. About twenty-five years ago he and wife moved from the home farm to town where they have lived since. The funeral services will be at the home Tuesday at two and will probably by conducted by Rev. P. J. Lough of Waynetown. The burial will be at Pisgah Cemetery near Beckville. He is survived by the widow, one daughter, five sisters, Mrs. Matilda Stewart, Mrs. Bettie Bowman, Mrs. F. M. Stoner, Mrs. E Mitter [Miller] and Mrs. Melvina Byrd, and seven brothers, Thomas M. and John I., of Apache, Okla.: Charles, of State Line; William, Newton, Messer B. and Elmer, of this vicinity.
