Poland - Jimmy

16-year-old- Jimmy POLAND along with his brother Melvin were riding their bikes on US Highway 36 when a car came up behind them. Jimmy reportedly called to his brother to get off the roadway, but Jimmy wasn't quite able to get to safety himself. The car struck the bike with its right front fender, Jimmy was hurled to the pavement and died almost instantly of a skull fracture. Jimmy would have been in his 2nd year at Turkey Run HS this fall. The driver of the car was a 76-year-old woman, Jean Elsie Taylor of Redford, Va. The incident occurred about half a mile E. of Bellmore at 5:10 p.m. Tuesday July 23, 1963. The body of the youth was taken to the Mau Funeral Home, Rockville where funeral rites will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2. The Rev. James O. Trousdale will officiate and burial will be in Mt. Moriah Cemetery. Jimmy is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Poland 3 brothers; Donald; Melvin and Steve; two sisters, Diana and Brenda and maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James Anderson. -- kbz
