Rev. Abraham Plunkett, one of the oldest ministers of the Christian church in point both of years and services, passed away at his home, 700 West Wabash Avenue, in Crawfordsville, Monday evening at 7:30 o’clock. He was stricken with heart trouble some time ago and this with his advancing age caused his death. Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon, at 4 o’clock, from the Christian church, Rev. J.M. Alexander and Rev. Kerr officiating. Rev. Plunkett was born in Putnam county and was 72 years and 5 months of age at the time of his death. He had been a resident of Montgomery county for thirty five years and had been a minister of the Christian church for more than forty- five years. During his life he and been in charge of a number of Christian churches, most of them in Montgomery county. Rev. Plunkett was one of the old self-made men of the old school. An interesting fact in connection with his life is that he did not enter school until he was 22 years of age, there being parental obligations to his doing so. At that age, however, he bravely took up the simple studies of the primary grades and in the first year completed the work to and including the sixth grade. At the end of that time the Civil war had just broken out and he enlisted in Company E. 72 Indiana. He studied his Bible assiduously during the war and all other books that came to his possession were eagerly read. He served as chaplin in his company and rendered efficient service during the four years struggle between the north and south. At the close of the war he entered Ladoga Academy as a student and graduated from that institution, soon after. He was a forceful speaker and much in demand. During the last two years he preached 200 funeral services. Besides the widow, who is the second Mrs. Plunkett, his first wife having died 30 years ago, three children survive him. They are Melanchon Plunkett, of Portland, Ore., Mrs. Maude Grainger, who is a missionary in India, and Mrs. Daisy M. Downey of Wolcott, Ind. Five grandchildren also survive. - typed by kbz

A large concourse of people went to the First Christian Church this (Thursday) afternoon to pay a last tribute to Rev. Abraham Plunkett in whose memory services were held at 6 o’clock. Rev. JM Alexander and Rev. Mr. Kerr officiated and each spoke briefly of the many sterling qualities and lovable character of the departed. The floral tributes were many and beautiful. The Christian Church choir composed of Mrs. Dan Lookabill; Mrs. Lawrence Lookabill DP Smith and Dan Lookabill sang Gathering Homeward, nearer my God to Thee and Abide with me. Mrs. WC Hessler was at the organ. The pall bearers were John Booe, OJ Shaver, JC Barnhill, JQ Clark, Charles Miller and Frank Humphrey. Burial was made in Oak Hill Cemetery.
