Pickel - Joseph

Joseph Pickel, 80 years of age, died last night at 10:30 o'clock at his home four miles southeast of the city, death resulting from a general breaking down, due to his extreme age.
Deceased was born near Fincastle, in Putnam County, but most of his life had been spent in this county. He was a retired farmer and a man of wide acquaintance. He was a soldier in the civil war, being a member of Co. 54th Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry. He was a member of the Christian Church for many years.
Mr. Pickel is survived by his widow, Mahala, four sons, Andrew, Otis, Jacob and Wilbur, and three daughters, Mrs. Ida Brown, Mrs. Rachel Terry and Mrs. Flossie Elliott; two brothers, Gabriel of Minnesota, and Oliver residing south of this city and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Stultz and Mrs. Nancy Todd, living near Fincastle.
The funeral will be held at the home Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. conducted by Rev. C. W. Ross, pastor of the Christian Church of this city. Interment at the Masonic Cemetery.

There wasn't very much info on the actual time he served, other than he was sick a lot, had many absences due to illness, and it doesn't mention any actual battles he may have served in. Most of his pension files are testimonies from doctors.
