Lee Philpott, 81, retired Covington businessman and former Fountain county official died at 8:30 a.m. Thursday in his home, 710 Washington St. He had been in failing health the past year and seriously ill since May 1955. Born Jan 23, 1874, at Wallace where he spent his boyhood. Mr. Philpott, was the son of Jasper and Sarah Livingston Philpott. He married Tessie Roberts March 22, 1900. He attended the Wallace School and Wabash College. Mr. Philpott had resided in Covington since 1909. During his early life he was a teacher in the Fountain County schools. Mr. Philpott served as Fountain County treasurer and deputy county treasurer for a number of years. He was elected county treasurer on the Democratic ticket after having served as deputy treasurer. He also was a teller in the old FIrst National Bank, Covington 16 years. In 1938, Mr. Philpott was elected Troy Township trustee and served in this capacity 8 years. Three years later he purchased a shoe store here which he operated until his health failed. Mr. Philpott was a member of the First church of Christ on 5th Street. He also had served as a deacon of the church. He also was a 60-year member of Ft. Lodge 60, F&AM. Survivors include the widow and a niece, Mrs. Jule Steinbaugh of Attica. Friends may call at the family residence. Funeral services have been set tentatively for 2 p.m. Saturday in the FIrst Church of Chirst, with burial at Lutheran Cemetery, near Wallace. - kz
