COVINGTON – Mrs. Mary K. Porter, age 62, a teacher in the Cayuga Elementary School and a former teacher in the Covington Elementary School, died in a fiery one-car crash shortly after 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, just south of the North Vermillion High School on Indiana 63. Mrs. Porter, alone and headed homeward after a shopping trip to Danville, Ill., went across the center line and knocked a 10-foot section of the solid concrete bridge railing into the river below. The auto burst into flames on impact, flipped over and landed on its wheels about 20 feet from the water’s edge, on the north and east side of the stream. The Cayuga Fire Department put out the blaze. Reports indicate it took over an hour to pry the car door open to remove the body and about four hours to remove the wreckage. State Troopers Ted Green and Bob Cook of Vermillion County investigated. Officers reported it is assumed that Mrs. Porter was either ill or had gone to sleep as she had a reputation as a careful driver. Mrs. Porter, who resided on Cayuga Rt. 1, was born July 23, 1906 in Coalmont, Ind., the daughter of Peter and Rose Dolian. She was married April 20, 1930 to Fred Porter, who survives.
