Pevler - Omer George

Omer George Pevler, 81, of Newtown, known for his service in state and local American Legion offices, died Saturday (Jan. 24, 1976) at the General Hospital in Mansfield, Ohio. He had been ill six years and patient there four weeks. A life member and a charter member of the Quigle-Palin American Legion Post, he also was a past commander of the Veedersburg and Newtown American legion Posts. He was district commander of the American Legion in 1958 and on the state religious committee in 1968 and 1969. He served as district and state chaplain of the American Legion and received the “George” award in 1964 from the Lafayette Journal and Courier for outstanding service. Mr. Pevler was a graduate of Wingate High and attended DePauw University at Greencastle, where he was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity. He was a soloist and sang in choirs and quartets in the area for many years. He was a veteran of World War I, he had served as a second lieutenant. He had been chairman of the Memorial Day services in Newtown for many years. He had served as manager of the Newtown Band and drummer for concerts and drum major for parades. Mr. Pevler was a member of the Newtown Presbyterian Church where he served as superintendent for many years. He had farmed in the area was employed at the Pitman Auto Co. in Hillsboro. During World War II, he accepted a position with Harrison Steel Foundry and was plant director when he retired at the age of 72. Born May 27, 1894, in Fountain County, he was the son of Gloomer Grant and Emma Fletcher Pevler, He was first married June 23, 1919, to Esther Campbell, who died March 2, 1969. He was married Nov. 2, 1973, to Ruth Smith, who survives. Other survivors include three sons, Patrick O. of Newtown, Robert V. and W. Baird, both of Lafayette; two daughters, Mrs. Robert M. (Phyllis) Towns of St. Louis, Mo., and Mrs. James R. (Carlotta) Germany of Mansfield, Ohio; a brother Harley of Wingate; 12 grandchildren, and a great grandchild and a niece. He was preceded in death by a brother. Services Thursday at the Newtown Presbyterian Church. Burial in the Newtown cemetery with Crumley Williams Funeral Home in charge. – jlr
