The
Oswego (N.Y.) Palladium of Monday, commenting
upon the death of Pettit, says: “His body arrived here today and is at Dain’s
undertaking rooms. It was the dying wish of Pettit that his body be buried
beside that of his wife at West Monroe . The
friends of Mrs. Pettit were notified, but they refused to receive the body of
the man who had killed the woman he had promised to love and cherish, so the remains
will be buried here.”
This
extract is a simple statement of the facts in the case. Mrs. Baker, Pettit’s aunt,
upon receipt of Warden French’s telegram announcing his death and request to be
buried beside his dead wife, wired the warden to send on the remains, and
addressed Mrs. Shields a note informing her of the facts, and the request. Mrs.
Shields’ answer was a peremptory refusal to permit it; so the remains were held
at Oswego , and
buried in the cemetery there beside those of his father, and there they rest.
Pettit’s mother, his only near relative, has lost her reason in consequence of
his trouble, and is living a helpless, but harmless, maniac with Mrs. Baker.
She does not know that her son is dead, and the family is keeping the knowledge
from her apprehending that it would but hasten the end.—Lafayette Call
