Barton C. Peterson, 24, native of Montgomery county and son of Harry Peterson of Smartsburg, was killed early Monday morning when his automobile crashed into a concrete culvert north of Rennselaer, according to word received here last night. The accident occurred as the young man was en route to a farm near Crown Point, where he is employed, following a week-end visit with relatives near here. It was believed the accident victim fell asleep at the wheel of his Plymouth coupe. He was reported to have been alone at the time of the crash. Young Peterson, a former athlete and a graduate of the Wingate high school with the class of 1935, was widely known as an expert cattleman. A few years ago he made a trip to Australia with a herd of thoroughbred cattle. Born April 6, 1916, north of Darlington, Peterson was the son of Harry and Grace Hunt Peterson. He was a member of the Methodist church at Wingate. Surviving, in addition to the father, are his stepmother, Mrs. Maude Peterson; a brother, Haines Peterson of east of Crawfordsville; a step-sister, Charlotte Sayler of Crawfordsville, and three grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Peterson of Darlington and Mrs. J. Peterson of Crown Point, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Peterson of Crawfordsville, were held at the Hunt and Reeves funeral home at 3:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. Rev. J. C. Whitson, pastor of the Wingate M. E. church was in charge, with Rev. Alford of Mace M. E. church assisting. Mrs. David Loveless of Crawfordsville sung "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere." Pallbearers were C. L. Miller, Harold Oxley, Byron Grenard, Morton Wilson and Frank Cope, classmates of the deceased, and Fred Foley of Crawfordsville. Flower bearers were Mary Johnson, Martha Johnson, Mrs. Harold Oxley, Geraldine Priebe and Kathryn Dazey, also classmates of the deceased, and Mrs. R. F. Parcoast, Mrs. Lewis Francis, Mrs. Byron Grenard, Mrs. Frank Cope, David Bonwell, Bill Etter and Robert Peterson, friends and cousins. Burial was made in Darlington Odd Fellows cemetery.
