William H. Peterman, the oldest citizen in this section, died on Friday Aug 30, aged 92 years, 4 months and 18 days. Funeral services at the Presbyterian Church on Sunday afternoon were conducted by Rev Cloyd Hershey. Interment was in the Presbyterian Cemetery. Mr. Peterman was born in Winchester, Frederick County Virginia March 12, 1815. He came to Indiana at age 19, stopping first at Vincennes. This was in the day of stagecoach travel. On August 15, 1839 he married Miss Rachel Sullenger of Carlisle, Sullivan County. To them were born one son, William who died October 31, 1864, and three daughters, Mrs. O.T. Crafton who died March 31, 1907; Mrs. John Robertson and Mrs. Robert Oldshue. When quite a young man he joined the Presbyterian Church under the ministry of Rev. Robert Taylor and remained a firm believer in its doctrines until his death. He was made a mason in 1848 and at the time of his death was the oldest mason in this County. He came to Waveland in 1848 and engaged in the undertaking business and as he was a cabinet maker by trade, he made his own coffins. In 1864 or thereabouts he engaged in the general store business with C.W. Talburt, continuing in which until he retired a few years ago. He enjoyed remarkable health, an attack of typhoid fever being the only serious illness previous tot he paralytic stroke that eventually ended his life. His death removes one of the landmarks; his daughters lose a loving and most devoted father, and Waveland one of her oldest and most respected citizens. - transcribed by kbz
