Brig. Gen John P. Pence, 62 of Tacoma, Wash, formerly of Rossville, died in Madigon General Army Hospital, Tacoma, at 9:30 p.m. Saturday after having been in failing health 15 months. Born in Clinton County he was graduated from Rossville HS in 1916, the son of Samuel R. Pence, a Rossville druggists, and Mrs. Pence. He began his military career at the US Military Academy in 1916 and was graduated and commissioned a second lt. in 1918. He resigned later from the Regular Army and entered the National Guard and in 1931 commanded the 236th artillery group at Tacoma and was 41st division artillery commander at the time of his transfer to the inactive list. He was a veteran of both WW I and II. Gen. Pence was married to Sarah Wilson who survives with a daughter, Mrs. Margaret Keyes and three sons, John of St. Paul, Minn, David of Boulder Creek, Calif and Robert of San Francisco and two brothers, Victor L. Pence, Waveland School Principal and Samuel Pence of Detroit.  – karen z
